Osteogenic Sarcoma

Radiology

These investigations are used to determine the extent of disease prior to therapy.

Local Extent

Plain films

  • Permeative, destructive lesion.
  • Gold Standard

CT

  • Shows bone destruction well
  • Only useful in anatomically complex sites

MR

  • Shows intramedullary disease and soft tissue extension

Distant Extent

CT Chest

  • Pulmonary metastases

Bone Scan

  • Bone metastases

PET scan (if available)

  • Potential to show all sites of metastatic disease, but unproven

Patients are also followed with these studies to assess response to therapy and to rule out relapse once therapy is completed.
